Firefighters battle 'wilful fireraising' at disused college campus

Fire crews have tackled a blaze at a disused college campus in Dundee.

The former site of Dundee College on the city's Constitution Road was targeted by "wilful fireraisers" on Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters were confronted by flames which had spread across the fourth floor of the building.

Crew members moved to extinguish the blaze and it was promptly brought under control.

Officers from Police Scotland are investigating the incident as an act of "wilful fireraising".

Witnesses and anyone with relevant information is asked to contact detectives on the police non-emergency number 101 or to get in touch with the charity Crimestoppers, which provides a confidential tip-off hotline on 0800 555 1111.

Standing on guard post-Nexen: Chinese state-owned enterprise and national security in Canada

International China expert draws lessons from Chinese SOEs staking claim in Canadian firms

Media Release

OTTAWA June 25, 2013 ?Canada must expect many more Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs)? to come knocking as they seek to invest in the high growth potential of Canada?s globally important energy and mineral resources.??? Yet last year?s vetting process for the proposed investment by the China National Overseas Oil Company (CNOOC) in oilpatch firm Nexen proved itself inadequate to the task, and highlighted the need for national security agencies to be fully engaged in judging whether such investments pass the ?net benefit to Canada? test for foreign investment according to a new Commentary released today by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute.

?This Commentary highlights the security-related implications of Chinese SOEs, particularly as demonstrated by the Nexen deal, and it also recommends effective risk-assessment criteria for future deals,? says author Roger Robinson, an internationally-recognised expert on the national security implications for Western countries of Chinese economic and business activities.

Despite evidence to the contrary, Chinese SOEs will continue to portray themselves as independent, remote, environmentally ethical and benign operators unaffiliated with the Communist government of China; these claims are at best dubious says? Robinson, author of ?Standing on guard post-Nexen: Chinese state-owned enterprise and national security in Canada?.

Lessons learned from the Nexen deal:

  • The government should not again place the Canadian security services in a position of playing catch-up;
  • The definition of an SOE needs to be scrutinized carefully;
  • Despite heightened sensitivities coming out of the Nexen experience, there is still significant room for greater vigilance and security-minded diligence; and
  • Every major Chinese company is controlled or influenced by the Communist Party.

The People?s Republic of China is an authoritarian police state that controls nearly every facet of people?s daily lives, a fact that is too easily forgotten when dealing with emissaries of the regime such as SOEs, including CNOOC.

This is where it becomes necessary to view Chinese SOEs and their ?private sector? equivalents through a security-minded lens. The Canadian economic and security community should be asking a different set of questions about such Chinese entities than they would, for example, about a Norwegian sovereign wealth fund or even a Malaysian state-owned firm, like Petronas. This is not due to mere speculation or unfounded suspicion, but is based on their behaviour. Among the standard inquiries the Canadian economic and security community should undertake are:

  • Is the SOE doing any business in security-sensitive countries such as Iran, Sudan, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, or Pakistan? What is the scope and type of that business?
  • Has the SOE solicited or received stolen commercial information/competitive intelligence on Canadian or other Western firms through the cyber warfare/hacking activities of the People?s Liberation Army (PLA) or other Chinese government-sponsored entities?
  • Does the SOE have any business divisions or activities supplying equipment, technologies, services, or commodities to the Chinese military, any of its affiliates, or the Chinese security/intelligence services? What is the precise nature of any such supplier relationship?
  • Do any subsidiaries or affiliates of the SOE have any military/intelligence ties or involvement in the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction or ballistic missiles?
  • Are any senior managers or Board members of the SOE or its subsidiaries now or have they previously been affiliated with the military or the security/intelligence services of the Chinese government? What are or were the nature of such relationships or former employment?
  • Have the SOE or its subsidiaries/affiliates been the subject of any corruption scandals or delisting from equity exchanges in China or abroad? If so, what are the underlying details?
  • Has the SOE ever been charged, directly or indirectly, with any World Trade Organization violations or with providing any form of unfair financial or trade subsidies?
  • Has the SOE or any of its subsidiaries ever been a member of a consortium of companies that has engaged in controversial, security-related projects domestically or abroad?
  • Has the SOE been responsible for despoiling the environment or committing public safety violations in China or abroad?
  • Has the SOE been responsible for the employment of forced labor or unsafe workplace conditions in China or abroad?
  • Has the SOE employed counterfeit or contaminated goods or materials in its manufacturing processes or broader business services in China or abroad?

Moving forward, making only minor tweaks to the current process of reviewing investments by SOEs from China is insufficient? given that the strategic intentions of these SOEs are substantially different than private firms from Canada or the US.? With known involvement from the PLA in SOEs it is not hard to see that the long-term objectives of Beijing will be at odds with Canada?s.? With this in mind, Ottawa must review investment by SOEs from China with more than the standard ?net benefit? test, and consider the broader strategic implications of a Chinese SOE acting as proxy for Beijing on Canadian soil.

Knowing that every SOE is controlled by the Chinese Communist party, the definition of what constitutes? an SOE needs to be carefully considered and greater scrutiny from security and intelligence services need to be implemented at the outset, so as to avoid? leaving Canada?s security services to play catch up.

Windows 8.1 Flyout Placement improvements

I like new Flyout control that has been introduced in Windows 8.1 but I think Placement property should be improved since I cannot show a Flyout at the bottom-left or bottom-right of a button (like logged menu Flyout in Windows).

I think Placement should be splitted in HorizontalPlacement (Left, Center, Right) and VerticalPlacement (Top, Bottom) to have more flexibility.

Post DOMA, wedding bells on 'Modern Family'?

Wednesday's Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage could have a big impact on one "Modern Family" in particular.

The co-creator of the ABC comedy, Christopher Lloyd, told Entertainment Weekly that we might soon see a wedding for one of TV's favorite couples, Cam Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson).

"It's a real possibility," Lloyd said. ?It?s certainly something we are contemplating on the show in ways we wouldn?t have in prior seasons. ... As you can imagine in Cam and Mitchell?s life, they would be feeling that a door has opened that was closed to them. Wouldn?t it be pretty tempting to think about walking through it? ... From our standpoint, that?s something to explore.?

Many in Hollywood celebrated the rulings with announcements of their own impending wedding bells: Melissa Etheridge revealed that she plans to tie the knot with her partner, Linda Wallem, and Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard recommitted to marrying one another now that their gay friends can host weddings of their own.

Amid the good cheer, Lloyd admitted that it was hard not to rally around his fictional characters, too.

?It?s a funny thing, sitting around and celebrating for your characters," he said. "We were happy for Mitch and Cam."

The actors who portray the loving couple were gleeful about the rulings themselves.

"Remember the old days when #DOMA was around and gay people couldn't get married in California? Crazy right!?" Tyler Ferguson tweeted.

"Im happy for my gay & lesbian friends. Cheers to gorgeous, wonderful & beautiful weddings, long, happy & fruitful lives and then dying," Stonestreet added.

Nets-Celtics trade? Rumors swirl of a Pierce-Garnett deal.

Nets-Celtics trade: The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics might be closing in on a trade that would bring All-Stars?Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Brooklyn.

By Brian Mahoney,?AP Basketball Writer / June 27, 2013

Boston Celtics center Kevin Garnett (5) congratulates forward Paul Pierce (34) during a playoffs game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden last month. The two Celtics All-Stars could soon be traded to the Brooklyn Nets, a person with knowledge of the talks said Thursday.

On the day they hosted the NBA draft, the Nets were making much bigger noise with a potential transaction that would send the two perennial All-Stars to a new Atlantic Division home.

Yahoo Sports, which first reported the talks, said the Nets would also get veteran Jason Terry from the?Celtics, while sending Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia, the expiring contract of Kris Humphries, and three future first-round picks to Boston.

The person confirmed the talks to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details were to remain private.

The deal would complete the breakup of the core that led Boston to an NBA championship and within a victory of another. The?Celtics?already let Doc Rivers leave after acquiring a draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers.

Garnett would have to waive a no-trade clause, which he has been reluctant to do previously. But the Nets hope he would consider this time with Pierce joining him and the?Celtics' best days seemingly behind them.

The?Celtics?tumbled down the Eastern Conference standings this season, falling all the way to the No. 7 seed and getting eliminated by the New York Knicks in the first round. They have been considering moving one or both of the veterans, and this would trigger the start of a true rebuilding process.

And it would provide a huge boost to the Nets at two of their weakest positions. They struggled to settle on a starting power forward all last season, and Pierce would be immune to the lengthy offensive slumps that plagued Wallace, the starting small forward.

Egypt protest blast was explosive device: sources

ISMAILIA, Egypt (Reuters) - A fatal blast during a protest against Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in the Suez Canal city of Port Said was caused by a home-made hand grenade, security sources said Saturday.

After the blast late on Friday, which killed one man, traces of an explosive substance were found on the bodies of some of the 15 wounded. Ballistics tests were still under way.

Hundreds of anti-government protesters had gathered in a central square in the city, at the Mediterranean end of the canal, one of several small demonstrations around the country ahead of mass rallies on Sunday aimed at unseating Mursi.

The chairman of the Suez Canal Authority said on Saturday that canal authorities were coordinating with the armed forces and security and intelligence agencies to secure the key global waterway.

Traffic of ships and cargo through the canal remained normal, he said.

Cities around Suez have already been flashpoints for violence this year, causing minor stoppages through the canal.

Where did Miesha Tate, the Jones family and Brendan Schaub fall on Cagewriter?s hot list?

It's been a slow week of MMA, but never fear. UFC 162 and a championship fight are oh-so-close. Who had a good week, and who didn't?

Hot -- Miesha Tate: She's filming "The Ultimate Fighter" now as a coach against UFC women's bantamweight championship. She will also pose nude as a part of ESPN the Magazine's Body Issue.

Not -- Brendan Schaub and Matt Mitrione: The one-time teammates started squabbling on Twitter like a bunch of seventh graders. They are fighting on July 27, so the squabbling will likely continue until then.

Hot -- The Jones' jewelry collection: According to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones' Instagram, the Jones family has much better jewelry than most of us.

Hot -- GLORY: The kickboxing promotion will become more available to the U.S. fans. They will start airing fights on Spike come October.

ataxingmatter: Senate Finance Leaders push "blank slate" to tax ...

? Senators Baucus and Hatch, the Chair and ranking minority member of the Senate Finance Committee, respectively, launched a bid for completing a Code reform before Baucus leaves office with a letter to Senators telling them that they should get their bids in within the month for any tax expenditures they want to preserve.? See Letter from Baucus and Hatch (June 27, 2013).

At first glance, this doesn't sound like a terrible idea. There are, indeed, too many tax breaks in the Code for huge estates, owners of capital, Big Oil, Big Pharma, "Non-Profit" hospitals, and corporate executives' deferred pay.? Wiping them away and then thinking through things fresh might be a part of a process for real tax reform that makes sense.

But it isn't clear that this duo can possibly carve a better system this way.? They have both already bought into the idea that the US has to?"lower rates" to let Big Business be "competitive", an idea that ignores business reality and sets Congress up for a series of lobbying "auctions" (this tax break for that campaign contribution)?[hat tip Evelyn Brody ].? They are both therefore part of the avid group of?Big Business supporters who want to cut taxes, not raise revenues to deal with infrastructure needs, safety net needs, climate change, and the many other challenges that face a nation that has spent 40 years in the thrall of bankrupt Chicago School market theories that support winner-take-all systems.? Both have touted the?idea that taxes should be "simpler''--as though having language that two-year-olds could read would be a reasonable way to ensure that the most sophisticated legal minds hired by the wealthiest Americans don't?scam the system!? Remember that most of the complications in the Code are there to do two things--to provide special tax subsidies lobbied for heavily by?Big Business?(with a few for ordinary folk) and to prevent sophisticated (rich) taxpayers from ripping off the system as much as possible.

?Worse, these two?have both already made it clear that the group they really want to hit are those who benefit from Social Security and Medicare expenditures--their goal isn't to make our social safety net sustainable through the centuries, but to cut holes in it so that the money can leak out in tax rate cuts to line the pockets of the wealthy heirs, the overpaid CEOs, and the banksters that caused the worst economic recession since the Great Depression, at great personal cost to millions of ordinary Americans who have lost their jobs, their homes, and their prospects for the future because of it.

Not surprisingly, their letter to fellow Senators starts with their?claim? that the current Code is "broken" "riddled with exclusions, deductions, and credits", with the result that "[t]he complexity, inefficiency and unfairness of the tax code are acting as a brake on our economy."?

Now, there are problems with the Code, that I won't deny.? But this litany of evils is just what the lobbyists for the corporate and wealthy ordered--it buys into the attempt by free marketarian/Chicago School economists to paint taxes as evil, as sources of anticompetitiveness, as such dragging anchors on businesses and entrepreneurs that it holds back the economy and "forces" Big Business to offshore its work to cheaper labor elsewhere.? And it sets the stage for an outcome that removes anti-abuse provisions and decimates progressivity in favor of the "identity theory" notion of fairness--that you have to have a flat rate that treats everybdoy the same to be fair.

Why is the identity theory of fairness absurd?? Because it ignores context.? It is like saying an Ant is as big as an Elephant, by ignoring the relativeness of size which is essential to the notion of bigness/smallness.? In other words, we can't talk about "fair" without some idea of the scale on which fair is to be measured.? And saying that "taxing everybody at the same flat rate" is inherently "fair" (as the right-wing proponents of a flat national sales tax tend to do) misses the point of what fairness is all about!?

Then Baucus and Hatch turn to their concept of the "blank slate" and the appeal for senators to name their favorite tax expenditures (ie, their favorite pet interest groups).

We need your ideas and partnership to get tax reform over the finish line. In order to make sure that we end up with a simpler, more efficient and fairer tax code, we believe it is important to start with a "blank slate"?that is, a tax code without all of the special provisions in the form of exclusions, deductions and credits and other preferences that some refer to as "tax expenditures. This blank slate is not, of course, the end product, nor the end of the discussion.? Some of the special provisions serve important objectives. Indeed, we both believe that some existing tax expenditures should be preserved in some form. But the tax code is also littered with preferences for special interests. To make sure that we clear out all the unproductive provisions and simplify in tax reform, we plan to operate from an assumption that all special provisions are out unless there is clear evidence that they: (1) help grow the economy, (2) make the tax code fairer, or (3) effectively promote other important policy objectives.

Of course, this "blank slate" approach is a call to arms for all lobbyists, who have already begun aiming their impressive resources at their selected targets.? See??Politico,?Tax Lobbyists Spring Into Action?.?

But beyond that, note what it says about the provisions--it will keep those that encourage economic growth, increase fairness, or promote other policy objectives.? We already know what lobbyists say about all of the provisions that they favor for Big Business and Big Money--that if you don't give favorable tax provisions to all those wonderful (purported) job creators, the economy will crash.? And we already know who will use the "make the code fairer" arguments to support their views--it will be the right-wingers who want to eliminate social safety net provisions from the Code.? They have lots of money from the Koch brothers and other right-wing wealthy individuals and institutions and lots of paid "scholars" like Cato, and Heritage and all the others to push their views.? Tell me--just who is going to lobby for the real concept of fairness in the Code--like (i) getting rid of the preference for capital over labor, (ii) getting rid of tax favorable treatment for any deferred payment or pension plans that are available only to the top managers of firms, (iii) instituting a decent estate tax that begins to eat into the oligarchic dynasties that we've allowed to be created by such limp excuses for estate taxation (including not only much higher rates with more rate brackets, but also elimination of most of the gimmicks using trusts and partnerships and purported discounts; or (iv) creating a much more discriminating rate structure for the income tax?that recognizes differences of income in magnitudes as they exist today?, with?rates for brackets that include half a mil to a mil, a mil to several mil, several mil to 20 mil, 20 mil to 80 mil, 80 mil to 150 mil....and on to the two billion mark??? And who is going to make the pitch that we have to raise more revenues in order to meet the needs of the aging baby boomer population as they retire with savings decimated by the Great Recession, homes lost to the lack of banking oversight, and facing significant increases in medical care costs?

It's pretty clear that neither Baucus nor Hatch has any desire to deal with real fairness issues, since that would require INCREASING THE PROGRESSIVITY OF THE CODE.? Note what they say to their fellow senators about the task ahead.

The blank slate approach would allow significant deficit reduction or rate reduction, while maintaining the current level of progressivity. The amount of rate reduction would of course depend on how much revenue was reserved for deficit reduction, if any, and from which income groups.

This phraseology reveals perhaps more than they wanted to reveal--first, that they are not even contemplating increasing progressivity, in spite of the past 40 years of reductions in progressive features.? And second, they really aren't planning to use elimination of tax expenditures to raise more revenues to make up for the absurd Bush tax cuts that they both helped put into place--note that they say the rate reduction will depend on whether any money is reserved for deficit reduction, providing a pretty strong indicator that there will be no revenues used for government and all the "reforms" would go to another foolish round of tax cuts.

Kitty Richards at ThinkProgress has some similar concerns about this "blank slate" announcement.? See Richard, Why we should be wary of 'blank slate' tax reform, ThinkProgress (June 27, 2013).? First, using the analysis done for the Simpson-Bowles "zero" plan (which was actually more protective of the lowest income than Baucus-Hatch have declared themselves to be), it would be very difficult to maintain progressivity (much less increase it as I have suggested is required) if base reduction is used to lower rates, since those who benefit most from lowering rates are the taxpayers with the most income.?

?The Tax Policy Center estimated the effects of the plan and found that it would have disproportionately increased taxes paid by low-income and middle-class families, not even taking into account the expiration of the Bush tax cuts for taxpayers making more than $400,000 per year legislated in last year?s ?fiscal cliff? deal. If you compare average federal tax rates under the zero plan and under current law, the zero plan looks even worse ? it would actually cut taxes for the top one percent by 10 percent, while more than doubling tax rates for the poor and increasing taxes on the middle class substantially.

Second, she adds, the Baucus-Hatch letter "treats decisions about revenue as an afterthought."? Yet revenue-raising is THE PRIMARY REASON WE HAVE TAXES.?

Congress should not be engaging in protracted tax reform negotiations that ignore the fundamental problem with our tax code: It does not raise sufficient revenue to fund the operations of government at appropriate levels in a sustainable way.

If Baucus and Hatch are interested in reforming tax expenditures, they should start by scaling back the biggest giveaways to corporations and the rich and devoting that revenue to repealing the sequester, not reducing tax rates for these same corporations and wealthy individuals.

Richards is right on in her critique.? We need to recognize the commitments we have to institutions and people, from infrastructure needs like roads and airports to wildfire prevention to climate change action to NIH and other support for basic scientific research on which rests most of the "entrepreneurial" innovations that the self-appointed meritocracy credits itself with.? That requires money, and money requires either printing more of it or more taxes.? More taxes from the wealthiest corporations and individuals also serves a secondary objective of increasing expanding opportunity and countering, to some small degree, the tendency for most government programs to function as upwards-redistribution paradigms that shift more and more resources to an oligarchic upper crust.

So I cannot think this Baucus-Hatch initiative augers well for the country.? I wish Baucus had used his imminent retirement to step back and consider what his legacy could be for a better world, rather than continuing to lie in bed with the lobbyists of the corporate elite.? What we need to do first is very simple--get rid of the multiple giveaways to big corporations, revamp the estate tax to make it heftier, and eliminate the many tax expenditures that are mainly for the wealthy (deductions of mortgage interest on second homes,?deferred?compensation schemes, etc.??

Honda orders recall because of fire risk -- for 2nd time

Autos

Image: Honda Fit

The Detroit Bureau

The 2007-2008 Honda Fit's master power window switch can short and even catch fire if it gets wet.

Honda has become the latest automaker to order a recall due to the risk of potential vehicle fires ? a problem linked to a defective power window switch that has led to major recalls at several competitors including Toyota and General Motors. Embarrassingly, it is the second time Honda has had to repair the affected vehicles for the same problem.

In fact, with the recall covering just 143,083 Honda Fit subcompacts sold in the U.S., the latest safety action is relatively modest when compared to the 2.5 million vehicles Toyota had to recall in the States for the problem last October.

The latest action involves 2007 and 2008 model-year Honda subcompacts and is linked to a defective power window module that is vulnerable to rain or spilled liquids that might over time get in through the driver?s window.

?Over time,? the maker explains in a release, ?exposure to water and other fluids can cause electrical resistance in the switch, which ultimately can cause the switch to overheat and melt, damaging the switch and potentially damaging an associated wire harness. Additionally, if a switch melts, it could produce smoke and, potentially cause a fire.?

That is precisely the problem Honda described in January 2010 when it conducted a recall of the same Fit models for the same problem, using a fix it now says, ?has since been determined by Honda not to be sufficiently robust to ensure that all switches would be completely sealed against all possible moisture intrusion.?

If that is not problematic enough, Honda apparently may have to subject some owners to an additional, two-step repair process. It is asking owners of the affected vehicles to bring the little hatchbacks in for inspection as soon as possible. If it appears the defective switches show obvious damage they will be replaced immediately. If not, the maker says it will send the vehicles home, and will contact them later in the year to come back for a replacement ?when sufficient supplies of the updated switch are available.?

It is becoming increasingly common for manufacturers to announce large recalls because underlying components are frequently shared among a wide range of vehicles. And many suppliers sell the same, or nearly identical, components to more than one manufacturer.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Terrorists may be targeting our high-tech cars

As a result, Toyota was forced to recall 7.4 million cars, trucks and crossovers last autumn to deal with the same power window switch issue, including 2.5 million sold in the States. It was the Japanese giant?s largest recall ever.

General Motors has also had to order major recalls covering a wide range of products due to the switch problem, including one recall announced earlier this month involving 250,000 Chevrolet Trailblazers and GMC Envoy SUVs.A defective airbag system produced by a single supplier, Takata, similarly led to a major recall by a wide range of Asian and Western makers earlier this year.

But the Honda recall is a problem for the maker at a variety of levels. It not only is ordering a re-do of previous work but could subject some owners to multiple additional visits to the repair shop.

Compounding the situation, Honda has suffered a growing number of safety-related recalls in recent years, coming in as first or second in terms of the number of individual vehicles involved for each of the last four years.

More from The Detroit Bureau:Would you buy a Chinese-made Ford

And this year it seems on track to lead the list again, having recalled several million vehicles sold in the U.S. for problems including brake and airbag defects, as well as transmissions that can shift out of Park resulting in runaway vehicles.

Nonetheless, the maker still landed in the Top 10 according to the latest J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey, a measure of problems experienced by owners during the first 90 days after purchase. But the maker lagged behind Toyota and, among mainstream brands, both Chevrolet and GMC ? their parent General Motors topping the IQS list among individual manufacturers for the first time.

Certified scuba divers are familiar with the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for decompression sickness treatment. However, in the past 50 years, researchers have revealed HBOT?s broad applications to human physiology and medicine. The outlook for HBOT applications for treating wounds, neurological diseases, and even certain cancers appears promising. What once seemed relevant only for scuba divers has now been discovered to benefit members of the general population.

Background

HBOT involves the administration of pure, 100% oxygen in a compression chamber at pressures above atmospheric levels. The resultant increase of oxygen content in blood yields a broad variety of physiological effects, because increased pressure allows oxygen to saturate more effectively in the body. For scuba divers, this increased oxygen pressure reduces the volume of inert-gas bubbles in blood vessels, reversing air embolism or decompression sickness (Danesh-Sani et al. 2012). Moreover, researchers have described several beneficial influences of HBOT on healing damaged tissues: increased white blood cell activity, reduced swelling, healing time reduction, tissue regeneration, and even synergistic activity with antibiotics (Stru?yna et al. 2008). The Undersea Hyperbaric Medicine Society recommends many applications for HBOT that have proven successful (Table 1). Beyond these now standard uses, several novel research areas demonstrate further beneficial HBOT applications. HBOT applications to wounds, cancers, and neurological and vascular diseases will be discussed below.

Table 1

Table 1

Wounds

Low oxygen content caused by swelling or burns reduces PH and prohibits wound healing. On the other hand, higher oxygen tension improves healing of wounds by stimulating tissue-forming cells (Danesh-Sani et al. 2012). Hyperbaric oxygenation of wounds thus initiates wound-healing events such as tissue and cell generation and resistance to infection (Shah 2010). Furthermore, oxygen helps fight against infections by killing bacteria that cannot tolerate oxygen (Youn 2001). For example, in treating injuries as common as burns, HBOT reduces healing time and number of infections (Stru?yna et al. 2008).

Cholesterol Crystal Embolism (CCE)

(A) Physical lesion at presentation; (B) worsening of lesions after 1 month of treatment; and (C) complete resolution of necrotic lesions after 1 month of HBOT (Gurgo et al., 2011).

(A) Physical lesion at presentation; (B) worsening of lesions after 1 month of treatment; and (C) complete resolution of necrotic lesions after 1 month of HBOT (Gurgo et al., 2011).

Such benefits also apply to patients of cholesterol crystal embolism (CCE), a disease with a high mortality rate. In a case study of a 56-year-old man who developed CCE and who had already undergone an unsuccessful standard treatment, HBOT caused rapid improvement. As seen in Fig. 1, after two months, complete recovery was obtained, leading the authors to conclude that HBOT may serve as an effective treatment in CCE (Gurgo et al., 2011).

Bone Healing

Another known application for HBOT is with bone healing, during which HBOT increases white blood cell activity and tissue formation (Danesh-Sani et al. 2012). Also, HBOT may induce the formation of new blood vessels by stimulating an increase of stem cells within the tissues (Shah 2010). An application of bone-healing effects regards the influence of HBOT on bone tissue after the cessation of smoking. Smoking has proven to delay bone healing and impair blood circulation; however, HBOT mitigates the effects of smoking on bone healing, now proving that bone damage caused by smoking may be reversible (Yen et al. 2008).

Surgery

Surgical injuries present yet another opportunity for HBOT intervention. Danesh-Sani and colleagues (2012) asserted that use of HBOT before surgical treatment significantly reduces risk of postoperative infection and accelerates healing, and other studies demonstrate benefits of post-operative HBOT application. In the case of urethral reconstructive operations, which commonly cause decreased erectile function, findings suggest that HBOT stimulates the regeneration of injured nerves and promotes tissue formation to allow erectile function recovery (Yuan et al. 2011).

Cancers

Solid tumors, which are often hypoxic, can increase genetic instability and activate invasive growth to exacerbate certain types of cancer (Moen & Stuhr 2012). By providing oxygenation, HBOT induces excessive oxygenation, which causes rapid degeneration and tumor cell destruction. As a result, HBOT is thought to yield beneficial effects in several types of tumors with minimal invasiveness (Danesh-Sani et al. 2012). As well, HBOT could improve and help overcome chemotherapeutic resistance by increasing cellular sensitivity to radiotherapy (Moen & Stuhr 2012).

Breast and Prostate Cancer

The adjunctive use of HBOT with chemotherapy has shown positive effects on reducing breast cancer. As the most frequently occurring cancer in women, breast cancer provides a worldwide threat, and HBOT has shown a strong effect against different mammary cancer cells. HBOT has also led to less aggressive and restricted growth of large tumor cell colonies (Moen & Stuhr 2012). Successful experiments regarding prostate cancer cells with HBOT have also generated affirming results. Cancer of the prostate is the second leading type of cancer for men, and in vitro experiments have demonstrated the efficacy of HBOT in decreasing the cancer cells??growth rate and increasing their sensitivity to chemotherapy (Moen & Stuhr 2012).

Neurological Diseases

The success of recent studies regarding the use of HBOT in improving neuromuscular pathologies has merited further investigation to confirm its beneficial uses and mechanisms.

The most evidence-supported neurological application for HBOT lies with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), which is currently diagnosed in 1 in 88 children in the US (CDC 2012). ASD includes neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by restrictive and repetitive behaviors as well as impairments in communication and social interaction. Several experiments involving the effects of HBOT on children with autism have reported clinical improvements, citing decreased inflammation and improved blood circulation to the brain. One study resulted in improvements in overall functioning for 80% of autistic children treated with HBOT, leading to the conclusion that HBOT is a safe treatment for as prevalent a neurological disease as ASD (Rossignol et al. 2009).

Vascular Diseases

HBOT may reduce the symptoms of vascular diseases by improving circulation and oxygenation.

Vascular Dementia

For instance, vascular dementia, caused by decrease blood flow to the brain, is characterized by loss of memory, confusion, problems with speech and understanding, and an increased dependence on others. While no effective treatment has been established, models have demonstrated HBOT?s ability to improve blood supply and promote nerve tissue formation in the brain and enhance learning and memory. One study found that patients receiving HBOT exhibited better cognitive function than patients of the control group after 12 weeks of treatment (Xiao et al. 2012).

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

HBOT is also used to treat carbon monoxide poisoning. Usually, hemoglobin proteins in red blood cells transport oxygen. However, carbon monoxide binds more readily to hemoglobin than oxygen.? As a result, the body is unable to distribute oxygen throughout the body when exposed to carbon monoxide resulting in hypoxia (Mills and Saulsberry, 2011). HBOT is effectively used to reverse this harmful effect.

Arterial gas embolisms and stroke

One of the common uses of HBOT is to treat arterial gas embolisms. An arterial gas embolism is when that gas in the circulatory system goes through arteries or pulmonary veins and blocks blood flow (Muth and Shank, 2000). In non-diving accidents the cause of arterial gas embolisms are caused by medical mistakes such as accidentally injecting air in patients. These escaped bubbles are very dangerous because they block blood flow to certain areas, resulting in hypoxic tissue. In the brain, reduced blood and oxygen flow can cause a stroke and brain damage. Acute stroke results from impairment of blood flow to the brain, which causes neuron cell death. HBOT may increase available oxygen and reduce brain swelling to prevent further neuron damage (Bennett et al. 2010). Stroke is a leading cause of death in the US, so these discoveries may yield huge implications. Hyperbaric medicine is effective in treating these problems because raising the pressure of the chamber causes the size of gas bubbles to decrease (Bell and Gill, 2004). In addition to the reduction in bubble size, oxygen can more easily dissolve to benefit the previously hypoxic environment (Muth and Shank, 2000).

Insulin Sensitivity

Another study proved that HBOT creates a substantial increase in insulin sensitivity. The improvement occurs rapidly (e.g., within three treatments) and is sustained at least until the thirtieth treatment. HBOT may induce insulin sensitivity by oxygenating fat tissue and reducing inflammation (Wilkinson et al. 2012). This discovery could have important implications, because insulin insensitivity is associated with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and certain types of cancer, which cause the majority of deaths in America (Colberg 2008).

Risks

While HBOT provides many beneficial treatments, there are some associated risks, such as oxygen toxicity. Metabolizing oxygen releases highly reactive byproducts that build up over time and saturate in tissue with increasing pressure. Resulting oxygen toxicity can lead to respiratory issues and seizures, because the toxicity often affects the lungs and central nervous system (Almeling et al. 2000).? Another risk commonly associated with HBOT is barotraumatic lesions, the result of unequal pressure between the outside and inside of an air containing space. For humans, the middle ear most commonly experiences barotrauma, but other areas include lungs, nasal cavities and sinuses, inner ears, and teeth (Almeling et al, 2000). Equalizing during treatment is important, because people who are unable to equalize their ears during HBOT can experience middle ear barotrauma (Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, 2011). Middle ear barotrauma, the most common side effect of HBOT, occurs when the pressure outside the ear is greater than the pressure of the middle ear.

Conclusion

While there are some risks associated with hyperbaric treatment, careful administration and thorough monitoring can limit the risk of side effects of HBOT. Although HBOT has not yet been adopted as the primary treatment for many of the mentioned conditions, it provides a minimally-invasive opportunity for treatment. The discovery of HBOT?s physiological benefits has demonstrated implications for treating the most prevalent ailments in the US. Thus, the newly-proposed, broadly-reaching benefits of HBOT applications beyond diving injury treatment merit deeper investigations. Indeed, with so many potential treatment functions, HBOT has earned its reputation as ?a therapy in search of diseases??(Danesh-Sani et al. 2012).

Gandolfini: A big man and everyman is eulogized

NEW YORK (AP) ? The funeral of James Gandolfini took place in one of the largest churches in the world and didn't stint on ceremony.

Still, the estimated 1,500 mourners who gathered Thursday in New York's Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine seemed part of an intimate affair. They came to pay their respects to a plain but complex man whose sudden death eight days before had left all of them feeling a loss.

During the service, Gandolfini was remembered by the creator of "The Sopranos" as an actor who had brought a key element to mob boss Tony Soprano: Tony's inner child-like quality.

For a man who, in so many ways, was an unrepentant brute, that underlying purity was what gave viewers permission to love him.

"You brought ALL of that to it," said David Chase in remarks he delivered as if an open letter to his fallen friend and "Sopranos" star.

Even though Gandolfini was indisputably a formidable man both on and off the screen, Chase also saw him as a boy ? "sad, amazed, confused and loving," he summed up, addressing his subject: "You could see it in your eyes. And that's why you are a great actor."

Susan Aston, who for decades was Gandolfini's dialogue coach and collaborator, spoke of how he wrestled to find truth in his performances.

"He worked hard," she said. "He was disciplined. He studied his roles and did his homework." But then, when the cameras rolled, his performance took over and, "through an act of faith, he allowed himself to go to an uncharted place. ... He remained vulnerable, and kept his heart open in his life and in his work."

The 51-year-old actor died of a heart attack last week while vacationing with his 13-year-old son in Italy. It was cruel end to a holiday meant to be part of a summer that Gandolfini was devoting to his family ? including his son and his 9-month-old daughter ? by even turning down a movie role, according to Aston, citing what she said was her final conversation with him.

Aston said he told her "I don't want to lose any of the time I have with Michael and Lily this summer."

The actor's widow, Deborah Lin Gandolfini, also spoke at the ceremony, as did longtime friend Thomas Richardson, who affectionately described Gandolfini as a man "who hugged too tight and held too long." But now facing a world without hugs from Gandolfini, Richardson invited the congregation to stand and share hugs with their neighbors.

"It is in hugging that we are hugged," he declared.

A private family wake was held for the actor Wednesday in New Jersey.

Broadway theaters paid tribute by dimming their lights briefly Wednesday night. Gandolfini was nominated for a Tony Award in 2009 as an actor in "God of Carnage."

For Thursday's service, celebrities and fellow actors helped make up the capacity audience.

Those from "The Sopranos" included Edie Falco, Joe Pantoliano, Dominic Chianese, Steve Schirripa, Aida Turturro, Vincent Curatola, Tony Sirico, Lorraine Bracco, Steve Buscemi and Michael Imperioli.

Others from the entertainment community included Julianna Margulies, Alec Baldwin, Chris Noth, Marcia Gay Harden, Dick Cavett and Steve Carell.

NBC News' Brian Williams was in attendance. So was New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

So was Saul Stein, 60, a resident of Harlem.

"I came to pay my respects today because he's a character I identify with, a family man," Stein said as he waited in line outside the church.

New Jersey accents were easy to hear among those hoping for a chance to get in. A few people spoke in Italian.

Of course, both New Jersey and Italian-Americans played a big part of "The Sopranos," which originally ran on HBO from 1999 to 2007.

Chase recalled a hot Jersey day early in the show's production that bonded him with Gandolfini ? with whom he shared Italian-American working-class roots ? for all times.

Waiting to shoot the next scene, Gandolfini was seated in an aluminum lawn chair with his slacks rolled up, black socks and black shoes exposed, and a damp cloth on his head in an effort to find some relief from the heat.

"I hadn't seen that done since my father used to do it, and my Italian uncle, and my grandfather," said Chase. "They were laborers in the hot sun of New Jersey."

"I was filled with love," Chase said, struggling to keep his composure, as he described the sight of Gandolfini in the broiling sun.

"I always felt we are brothers," he said, "based on that day."

Modeling based on player roles rather than individuals

Investigators at Disney Research, Pittsburgh, have developed an automated technique for analyzing the patterns of play of field hockey teams, providing a new tool for coaches and commentators who must make sense of mountains of video and other game data.

Because players constantly change roles during the flow of play a left winger switching temporarily with a right winger, or vice versa the researchers found that focusing on player roles, rather than the identity of an individual, was best for detecting the tactics, strategy and style of play for each team. The video tracking data that the algorithm used as input contained errors but the modeling technique was effective in correcting many of the tracking or detection errors.

The researchers evaluated their methods using high-definition video of portions of three games recorded by eight fixed cameras. Findings of the study will be presented at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, June 25-27, in Portland, Ore.

Patrick Lucey, a Disney researcher who specializes in automatically measuring human behavior, said the automated method developed for field hockey is applicable to virtually any team sport involving continuous play, including basketball, ice hockey and soccer. It could streamline the process of video analysis for coaches and their staff, providing an overview of tendencies and behaviors that would allow the coaching staff to focus on the most consequential plays and players.

Star players obviously can have considerable impact on a match, Lucey acknowledged, but the focus on player roles rather than individual identities still makes sense. "It's like when we watch a game on TV," he explained. "A lot of the time, we may not be able to identify a player, but we know where he should be based on the other players."

Demand for such automated methods has increased because of the data-driven, quantitative techniques that many professional sports teams now use to analyze performance. "We have a rich source of data, so what do we do with it? How do we make comparisons?" Lucey said. Though coaching staffs can manually quantify performance, computers have an advantage because they can compare many more teams and analyze many more matches a whole season's worth or even multiple seasons, he noted.

A coach might use such a system to evaluate how a future opponent performed when playing a team with a similar style to the coach's own team, or to identify weaknesses in the team's play that appear repeatedly over the course of a season.

Sports events unfold over both space and time, so the research team used what's called a bilinear spatiotemporal basis model to represent play. This method of modeling dynamic objects in this case, players and their opponents was developed by Disney Research, Pittsburgh, and their collaborators, and simultaneously takes space and time into account when creating models.

The Disney team found that the spatiotemporal modeling approach was effective in representing role play during a match. It also helped compensate for the errors that tend to occur in computer vision systems failure to detect some players, or falsely detecting a "phantom" player. People normally have to spend time eliminating this "noise" in the data, but the spatiotemporal modeling approach proved effective in making these corrections.

The researchers compared their automated "de-noised" data with human-annotated game play data and found only small differences between the two. In assignments of player roles, the researchers found that their system did a good job of identifying the roles of forwards and of defenders, though the system did get confused at midfield because of the frequency with which players change position in that region of the field.

In addition to being an assistive tool for coaches and their staff, automated analysis also could be a boon to television commentators faced with an increasing amount of data and presenting reports on an increasing number of digital platforms, Lucey said.

In addition to Lucey, the research team included Peter Carr and Iain Matthews of Disney Research, Pittsburgh; Alina Bialkowski, a Disney intern and Ph.D. student at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia; Stuart Morgan, a performance analyst at the Australian Institute of Sport, and Yaser Sheikh, assistant research professor in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.
