More Samsung Galaxy S4 units 'now floating into' Sprint sales channels

Galaxy S4

Samsung is 'ramping up production' for Sprint

Samsung Galaxy S4 supplies have been lower than expected at launch, which has affected multiple carriers -- with Sprint being no exception. In a recent note we received from Sprint, we learned that the carrier's Galaxy S4 orders would be limited mainly to online and over-the-phone orders, with in-store supplies being very scarce due to low supplies.

The new note we received from Sprint today contains much better news: increased Galaxy S4 inventory is now starting to make its way into Sprint sales channels, thanks to increased production from Samsung. New shipments are expected on a daily basis, which will make things much easier on those looking to score one of the year's hottest phones. If supplies continued to be replenished, it shouldn't be hard to find one of these phones in a Sprint store relatively shortly.

Meebo to retire toolbar on June 6th, plans to focus on Google instead

Just over a year ago Google snapped up a little social outfit called Meebo, quickly dismantling most of the firm's services. The lone survivor? The Meebo Bar, an unobtrusive social toolbar that offers Facebook, Twitter and Google+ connectivity as well as minimal advertising. Nothing lasts forever though -- Meebo has announced that the Meebo Bar will stop functioning on June 6th 2013. It's a bit of a bummer for sites that employ the tool, but at least they won't have to do anything to deactivate the service: Meebo says the code should become inert as soon as the service discontinues. The team says it plans to focus its efforts on Google+ Sign-In and Google+ plug-ins, which it sees as the best way to serve desktop and mobile publishers in the future.

New robots crawl like sea turtles

Researchers have designed a new type of robot modeled on sea turtles known as FlipperBot. This is the first robot to use flippers against pliable surfaces and has moved the work toward amphibious robots forward.

By Charles Q. Choi,?TechNewsDaily / April 24, 2013

Georgia Tech associate professor Daniel Goldman and researcher Nicole Mazouchova watch FlipperBot move through a bed filled with poppy seeds.

Flippered robots inspired by sea-turtle hatchlings could shed light on how the ancestors of terrestrial animals first evolved to crawl on land, researchers say.

Such research could also lead to amphibious robots that can tackle both land and sea, investigators added.

Scientists are designing robots that can go where humans cannot or should not go, and often rely on inspiration from nature to do so. For instance,?snakelike robots?could, in principle, slither into crevices to help find disaster victims.

Challenging environments for robots to cross include?sand, gravel, soil, mud and other unstable granular surfaces?that can deform around legs in complex ways. To learn new ways to navigate such ground, Daniel Goldman, a physicist at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and his colleagues investigated sea-turtle hatchlings.

"These little turtles are remarkably effective at moving over solid ground, with limbs designed for moving in fluid," Goldman told TechNewsDaily.

The researchers analyzed 25 baby loggerhead sea turtles from nests on Jekyll Island, one of Georgia's coastal islands, at night. They investigated how the turtles crawled on tracks of beach sand housed in a truck parked near the beach, video-recording them as they moved in the darkness toward a light that simulated the moon. [See also:?10 Animal-Inspired Robots]

Goldman and his colleagues Nicole Mazouchova and Paul Umbanhowar were surprised to learn the hatchlings moved about as quickly on soft sand as they did on hard sand.

"The turtles insert their flippers just deep enough into soft sand so that the material does not yield behind the flipper as they move," Goldman said. "That means the sand doesn't flow around the flippers, and they don't slip ? so they can propel themselves."

The key to performing well, regardless of the conditions of the sand, seemed to lie in how the turtles controlled their wrists.

"On hard ground, their wrists locked in place, and they pivoted about a fixed arm," Goldman said. "On soft sand, they put their flippers into the sand, and the wrist would bend as they moved forward. We decided to investigate this using a robot model."

These findings led to the development of FlipperBot, the first robot to employ flippers against malleable surfaces. The small droid is about 7.5 inches (19 centimeters) long, weighs 2 lbs. (970 grams), and has two motor-driven flippers with flexible wrists similar to sea turtle wrists

Rambler Takes Home The Disrupt NY 2013 Hackathon Grand Prize, Learn To Drive And Radical Are Runners Up

IMG_7362The past 24 hours have just flown by for the hundreds of hackers here at the Disrupt NY Hackathon, but the sun is finally up and it’s time to pass judgment on their caffeine-fueled projects. As it turns out, there’s a ton of them here — with 164 registered projects this is our biggest Hackathon yet, and each presenter only had 60 seconds to wow our judges (not to mention the rest of the audience). As you might guess there was no shortage of amazing projects that came together in a single day, but our judges could only choose one team to take home our $5,000 grand prize. Anyway, that’s enough out of me — meet our newest Hackathon winner! Winner: Rambler Rambler, created by William Hockey, Zach Perret and Michael Kelly, is a web app that lets users view their credit and debit card transactions on a map. During the dev process, the team tapped the Foursquare API for locations and the Plaid API to access user spending data. Runner-up #1: Learn To Drive Learn To Drive, created by Jared Zoneraich, Jemma Issroff, Kenny Song, and Nicholas Joseph, is an app for the GM vehicle platform that acts as a virtual driving instructor by speaking driving instructions aloud and displaying driving statistics, such as miles driven, hours driven, and hours driven at night. Runner-up #2: Radical Radical, created by Sam Saccone, Carl Sednaoui, and Jeff Escalante, allows users to create attractive calendars and embed on webpages with a single line of code. These three teams will also demo their projects on the main Disrupt stage on Wednesday afternoon, but that’s not to say everyone else is going home empty-handed. Hackathon sponsors Appery.io, AT&T, CrunchBase, General Motors, Microsoft Bizspark, Microsoft Skydrive, NewAer, Pearson, Samsung, Twilio, Visa, Wrigley and Yammer have also graciously doled out prizes of their own for the most innovative and interesting uses of their APIs and services. And just who decided the fate of these sleep-deprived hackers? Our panel of judges includes Mahaya CEO Tarikh Korula, Path101 co-founder Charlie O?Donnell, founder/CEO of The Muse Kathryn Minshew, bit.ly chief?scientist?Hilary Mason, FuturePerfect Ventures founding partner Jalak Jobanputra, and BoxGroup Managing Director David Tisch.

Microsoft makes Windows Phone commercial, sells iPhone instead

Microsoft has released a new commercial for the Windows Phone Nokia Lumia 920, and in it they show off both Apple's iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S. A lot. So much, in fact, it's hard to know what the commercial is about until the very end, when the Lumia 920 finally makes an appearance. Anyone outside Microsoft see the problem there?

The theme is: Don't fight. Switch. The setting is a wedding where the groom and the bride's side both use different phone platforms, and quickly get into a heated, and pretty funny war of insults that escalates into full-blown Mobile Kombat. When nothing but dust and decimation remains, the waiters wonder if Lumia couldn't just help them all get along.

Here's what Microsoft's Michael Stroh had to say on the Windows Blog:

I chuckled when I first saw the spot. As you?ll see, it plays off the strong?even irrationally strong?feelings some of us harbor about the technology in our purses and pockets. You might recognize someone you?ve met among the wedding guests. You might see shades of yourself. I sure did?and smiled.

I did as well. And it wouldn't be out of place on a late night comedy show. Actually, it would kill as comedy. But this isn't comedy, it's the real, brutal, smartphone market, and here is that Microsoft is promoting Apple and Samsung over their own brands, and that's exactly what happens to them in the market already. Apple had a "switcher" campaign for the Mac many years ago, and while they had a generic "PC" character, he was seldom if ever branded, and there certainly wasn't ever any recognizable, competing hardware in the frame.

Ultimately, however, I didn't really end up caring any more about Windows Phone than I did at the beginning, and that makes it a pretty ineffective commercial. Give it a watch and tell me what you think. Anything there that's better than, I don't know, say Microsoft actually releasing an XPhone Halo edition?

Rumford wins playoff to take Ballantine's title

(AP) ? Australia's Brett Rumford eagled the first hole of a three-way playoff to win the Ballantine's Championship in South Korea on Sunday.

Rumford was leading by two shots when he double-bogeyed No. 17. He holed a 10-foot par putt at the last to finish at 11-under 277 and force a playoff with Marcus Fraser of Australia and Peter Whiteford of Scotland.

Rumford then holed a 4-foot eagle to earn the victory.

"I battled today with my driver constantly as I was leaking a few drives right, including the whole back nine when I was feeling stuck, so I had a quick word to Pete (coach Peter Cowen) and then hit about five or six balls off the first tee, and that did the trick ... it's a funny game because it was an absolute roller-coaster ride of emotions out there this afternoon," said Rumford.

"Of course, what happened at 17 made my work a whole lot more difficult but I'm really pleased with my result."

Rumford is the first Australian to win on the European Tour in two years and he drew on the inspiration of Adam Scott who became the first Australian to win the Masters earlier this month.

"Scotty's win was a huge inspiration to all of us," he said. "It's just good on the European Tour side of things as we needed to make a shift and get a few runs on the board because the Aussie guys in the U.S. have been doing a great job."

Rumford started his final round in sizzling manner with six birdies in his opening nine holes including four in succession from the sixth hole.

Whiteford let slip a maiden European Tour win in his 142nd event when he missed a five-foot birdie putt on No. 18.

South African Louis Oosthuizen, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 7, shot a final-round 69 to finish three strokes behind the leaders in a share of fifth place.

However, for a second day running the former Open champion came unstuck at the par-three No. 13, recording a double bogey and a day after walking off the same hole with a triple bogey.

Thailand's Thongchai Jaidee produced the lowest final-round score of 65 to finish among five players tied in sixth at 7 under.

Tyler Bray and Marcus Lattimore show opposite emotions of 2013 NFL Draft

The fortunes of Tyler Bray and Marcus Lattimore showed the ups and downs of what was a historic 2013 NFL Draft for the Southeastern Conference.

Somehow, University of Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray ? a 6-foot-6 specimen with a cannon arm ? was not selected in the seven rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Somehow, University of South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore found two knees to stand on at his pro workout earlier this spring ? enough to get him a standing ovation from the coaches and scouts present and a selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the fourth round.

In a draft where 63 players from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) were selected ? a record for any college football conference ? two of the SEC players who made the biggest splash on the last day of the three-day extravaganza Saturday did it for opposite reasons.

Bray was left standing at the altar. Admittedly, this was not a sterling draft for quarterbacks. But perhaps that's why he decided to leave Tennessee a year early year to go pro. According to one mock draft, NFLDraftScout.com, he was seventh best pick of the litter. In the end, he wasn't even among the 11 chosen.

It's a glimpse into a situation that plagued basketball for years. Many high school players, egos inflated by friends and hangers on, would enter the National Basketball Association draft, forgoing any college eligibility. When they were not drafted ? or drafted late and then let go ? they would be left in a limbo, not good enough to make a pro team, but not able to go to college to hone their skills.

The situation forced the NBA to institute a "one year in college" rule for all players, giving each time to assess his draft prospects with clearer eyes. The NBA has also started a developmental league akin to the baseball minor leagues to help those who fall through the cracks.

In the end, Bray was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs after the draft ? and as a junior, he had ample time to make an informed decision about his pro prospects. But the National Football League also has a Draft Advisory Board precisely for this reason. It offers undergraduate prospects an impartial assessment of where they're likely to land in the draft.

Subaru recalls more than 10,000 Forester wagons

(AP) ? Subaru is recalling just over 10,000 of its 2014 Forester wagons because the floor mats can interfere with the clutch, brake or gas pedals.

The recall affects Foresters made from January 2013 through March. The company says the floor mats can curl when exposed to heat.

The problem was discovered in cars arriving at a port in Vancouver, Washington.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the mats could distract the driver or interfere with operation of the car.

Subaru traced the problem to improperly manufactured backing on the mats.

Dealers will replace all four mats free of charge. It will begin notifying owners in April.

Jackson trial witness list includes stars, kids

Sony Pictures

Michael Jackson in 2009, rehearsing his "This Is It" tour.

By Randee Dawn, TODAY contributor

This is it: On Monday, the wrongful death civil trial pitting members of Michael Jackson's family against tour promoter AEG Live is set to begin in Los Angeles. Depending on any number of legal factors it could end up being a long slog, dipping into the darker side of fame and celebrity.

But one thing drawing attention right now is who could take the witness stand -- given the Jackson family legacy its no surprise the list is lengthy, and star studded.

Currently, there are 97 possible witnesses for the plaintiffs and 113 for the defense (though overlap is likely in some cases), according to the?Los Angeles Times. Dr. Conrad Murray, whose actions (or lack of thereof) precipitated Jackson's death could be a key witness on the stand -- if he speaks. As noted on TODAY last week?Murray, now serving out and appealing his sentence of involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death, is likely to take the 5th.?

Jackson's mother Katherine has already been deposed; his son Prince and daughter Paris are likely to to discuss Jackson's final hours on the stand. Katherine, Michael Joseph "Prince" Jackson, Paris Michael Katherine and Prince Michael Jackson II -- aka "Blanket" -- are are the plaintiffs in the case.

The?plaintiff's witness list also includes director Spike Lee, bodybuilder and "Incredible Hulk" star Lou Ferrigno, music producer Quincy Jones, longtime Jackson family friend and singer Diana Ross and Jackson's ex-wives Lisa Marie Presley and Debbie Rowe. "Purple Rain" musician Prince has also been named as a potential witness.

Ferrigno was initially enlisted by Jackson to help him get in shape for the "This Is It" tour, as People noted, something the muscleman had done for Jackson in 1994. "Being 50, his body went through a lot of stress getting ready for the tour, but he was awesome," Ferrigno told People back in 2009. It seems likely that as his personal trainer, Ferrigno will have a first-hand opinion about Jackson's fitness.?

Jones was a long-time friend of Jackson's (as well as a producer of albums including "Thriller" and "Bad") and?hinted to Details?after Jackson's death?that what killed the pop star was as much psychological as physical: "I'm a musician. I'm not a psychiatrist. I would think that the pressure of the concerts and the debt and everything else.... I know that Lisa Marie Presley said she always thought was going to die like Elvis. You sit and think about that stuff, it'll happen to you."

What other celebrities may contribute remains murkier. Ross was next in line after Jackson's mother to be the guardian of his children, though there is no indication that she had any specific knowledge about his death. The singer Prince might seem to have been Jackson's sons' namesake, but reportedly that's an old Jackson family name. Spike Lee has directed several projects related to Jackson, including 2012's "Bad 25" documentary and two music videos for the singer's 1996 "They Don't Care About Us" song.

The trial won't be televised, which may dial down the circus factor -- but this is Hollywood, and Jackson remains nearly as iconic a draw in death as he did in life.?

Matt Mitrione?s suspension is already over

UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione was suspended on April 8 for his transphobic comments about trans fighter Fallon Fox. At the time, the UFC said they were "appalled" by his comments and said his words were "wholly unacceptable."

Yet now, on April 25, Mitrione is off suspension and has a fight scheduled. Mitrione will fight fellow "The Ultimate Fighter" castmember Brendan Schaub on the July 27 UFC on Fox 8 show.

122 days passed between Mitrione's last two fights. By the time he gets in the cage with Brendan Schaub at UFC on Fox 8, 112 days will have passed since his knockout of Philip de Fries. How is that a suspension?

Here we have the problem with MMA and suspensions. This isn't like football or basketball, where every athlete has the same amount of events, and a suspension of five games means the same thing for everyone. In MMA, some fighters fight once a year. Some fight four times a year. For a suspension to mean anything, it has to be for several months, and a fighter's ability to get in the cage must be affected.

Airport Transfers: Why Is It Better Than A Taxi Or Cab?

By: Edmund Brunetti Flight timings can be vary a lot and some of them may drop you to less familiar destinations at those unearthly hours when finding a cab can get difficult. When you are traveling to an unknown city or country, then it is always advisable to take the help of airport transfers service. This would give you the facility of a chauffeur-driven car to the place where you wish to go. It is not only convenient but also exempts you from any hassle or trouble. For instance, if you land at the airport late in the dead hours of the night or very early during daybreak, then you may find it hard to look for an alternative form of transport. Such pre-arranged transfer services work best to avoid such situations.

Tenerife airport transfers bring you safe and secure transport system so that you can make full use of the facility while flying in or flying out of the town. The services would include dropping you to your hotel and also picking you during your return journey. Besides, if you wish for some extra services or custom services, then you can make a request very easily. Many people especially the tourists and backpackers also make use of the service for sightseeing and other travel-related purpose.

There is not much of a difference between a transfer service and a taxi. Taxis need to be booked on spot, unless you have access to prepaid taxi booths. Taxis are unreliable in most cases, and quite often the driver may try to extract more money out of you. You may not feel fully safe with him and he wont bother to listen to your custom requests. On the other hand, airport transfers are dependable and can be banked upon fully. Security, safety and faith are essential features of such services.

These services are run by professional travel operators. So, there is no question or doubt about the quality and safety which such transfers bring with them. All you need to do is to ensure that the company or operator is a genuine and popular one. You can easily figure that out after having a brief chat with the operator. You can also visit the website of these transport providers, take a look at the baggage of services which they offer, and contact them through email or telephone to finalize the matters or to place some special private requests. Most of the reputed professionals would have no problem in listening to your customized requests and tweaking their services accordingly to suit your convenience.

Tenerife airport transfers offer you a huge basket of cars to select from. It is always a wise thing to inspect the entire bouquet of vehicles on disposal and then select one according to your budget and the size of the family. Some cars can have ACs and some can be free from them; some cars can have other luxuries as well. The rates for the transports would obviously vary and would increase with increasing features and amenities. So, select a car after considering all your options.

TSX up 6th day on upbeat data, Potash earnings

By John Tilak

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index extended its gains into a sixth straight session on Thursday, buoyed by positive U.S. economic data and a stronger-than-expected earnings report from Potash Corp .

Investors were encouraged by data showing the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, offering reassurance that the bottom is not falling out of the labor market.

The Toronto market, which posted its biggest jump in more than eight months on Wednesday, has erased most of the losses incurred during a massive commodities-led rout earlier this month.

"The TSX is staging a bit of a recovery," said Keith G. Richards, portfolio manager and technical analyst at ValueTrend Wealth Management. "I see this near-term rally as a near-term rally, and that's all."

He expects weakness in banks and commodities to hold the index back over the next couple of months.

Despite the gains, the index is down 0.9 percent on the year, compared with a 10.7 percent rise in the S&P 500.

The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index <.gsptse> was up 53.18 points, or 0.43 percent, at 12,323.61 on Thursday. It hit its highest point since the huge selloff on April 15.

Eight of the 10 main sectors of the index were higher.

A 2.4 percent gain in Potash and rise in gold shares boosted the materials sector, which climbed 2.3 percent.

The price of bullion hit a 10-day high, lifted by a weak dollar and strong physical buying.

Potash said it was abandoning efforts to take over Israel Chemicals Ltd because of strong opposition in Israel. The fertilizer giant also reported a stronger-than-expected 13 percent rise in profit after renewed sales to China and India.

"Potash has got near-term upside," Richards said. "Positive news on the stock is going to push it a bit."

Make Boomsa for the Motherland!

In February, the R&B group Boyz II Men performed a show in Moscow. Several Western media outlets claimed that the concert was done at the behest of Vladimir Putin, as part of his campaign to get Russians to make boomsa for the motherland?the idea being that the sweet, smooth grooves of ?I?ll Make Love to You? would be a nice warm-up act for Valentine?s Day.

This was something of a hoax: It?s not clear that Putin actually had anything to do with the booking. Or that the Moscow concert was anything other than a routine tour stop for the group. But the Boyz II Men story caught on because it fit in with some of the outlandish measures Russia has taken in recent years to boost its low fertility rate.

Putin began his natalist campaign in 2008, declaring it the "Year of the Family.? There were billboards and placards encouraging people to have children. A park in Moscow debuted special benches designed to gently slide couples closer together, all the better for canoodling. July 8 was designated ?Family, Love, and Fidelity Day,? a new holiday created to encourage family formation. This was the third holiday Russia had created for such a purpose: In 2007, Sept. 12 was named ?Family Contact Day,? a day on which workers were given time off and encouraged to, like, totally do it. Women having babies nine months later, on ?Give Birth to a Patriot on Russia Day,? won fabulous prizes ranging from TVs to an SUV.

Russia has also instituted some more traditional natalist policies; for instance the government began a program that pays mothers $10,000 for the birth of a second child. Putin?s stated goal is that ?the three-child family should become the norm in Russia.?

He is not the first Russian leader to worry about the country?s fertility rate. In 1944, as Russians were being ground up in the war against Germany, Josef Stalin created the ?Motherhood Medal? for women who bore six children. (That was for the First Class order; only five children were required for Second Class. You can pick a medal up pretty cheap on eBay.) In 1955, Nikita Khrushchev surveyed the nascent Western overpopulation mania and declared it a ?cannibalistic theory? invented by ?bourgeois ideology.? He continued: ?Their concern is to cut down the birth rate, reduce the rate of population increase. It is quite different with us, comrades. If about 100 million people were added to our 200 million, even that would not be enough.?

The old Soviet regime rolled out a series of childbearing incentives: First, lump-sum payments for the birth of children. Then increased state benefits for families with children, including bonuses for housing and work allowances. In 1981 the Politburo offered women a full year of partially paid leave for having a baby. In 1986 it upped the ante to a year-and-a-half ?s worth of leave.

None of it worked, then or now. The Soviet Union?s fertility rate?that?s the average number of children a woman bears during her lifetime?declined throughout the ?50s, ?60s, and ?70s. The only brief period of increase came during the late 1980s. And then it resumed decline.

Putin?s initiatives haven?t fared any better. The Russian government declared demographic victory in 2012 because there was an increase in the crude number of births. ?The demographic programs enacted in the past decade are, thank God, working,? Putin said. But most demographers believe this is a statistical ghost?the slight spike in fertility rates during the late ?80s created a relatively fat cohort of women now in their prime childbearing years. So while the number of births has increased thanks to the size of this cohort, Russia?s total fertility rate has remained very low. The CIA World FactBook puts it at 1.61. The replacement fertility rate?the number of births the average woman must have in order to hold population constant?is 2.1. Which is why Russia?s population has been declining for several years now. And will continue to decline in another year or two, once the statistical ghost has been given up.

Russia?s situation isn?t unique. Fertility rates began falling in Western, industrialized countries in 1968. By 1975, every Western First World nation was below the replacement rate. Over the course of the next two decades, massive fertility decline spread worldwide: In 1979, the global fertility rate was 6.0; today it?s 2.52 and still declining. While the lay press has spent the last 30 years fretting about increasing world population, the academic community has been largely concerned with the opposite. Because when you look at just the top-line number you miss the more important, rate-based trends. So today, most population models suggest we are currently at ?peak child,? as economist Hans Rosling puts it. That is to say, the world currently has about 2 billion children and that number is likely to decline over time, not increase. Which means that all of our remaining population gains?in terms of the absolute number?will come from increased life expectancy.

Which in turn means that the world is actually headed toward population decline. I?ve written a whole book about this? What to Expect When No One?s Expecting?but don?t take my word for it. Slate contributor Jeff Wise wrote an excellent piece distilling the academic research just a few months ago.

CSN: Bullpen again fails Phillies in loss to Pirates

BOX SCORE

For the second time in less than 24 hours, the Phillies coughed up a lead in the late innings.

This time instead of the bullpen being the lone culprit, starting pitcher Cliff Lee had a hand in matters when he couldn?t get the third out in the seventh inning in the Phils? 6-4 loss to the Pirates on Thursday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

For the Phillies (9-14), it was their third straight loss to the Pirates and fourth loss in the last six games. It's the Phillies' first-ever series loss to the Pirates at Citizens Bank Park.

Starting pitching report
Lee needed 122 pitches to get through seven innings. Though he had seven strikeouts with just one walk, Lee ran into trouble in the seventh inning where he coughed up a two-run lead. With two outs and one on, Lee allowed three straight singles as the Pirates tied the game.

Lee allowed three runs on 10 hits. He did not have a single 1-2-3 inning.

Pirates? starter James McDonald faced three hitters in the sixth inning, allowing two hits and a walk. Up until that point he had allowed just three hits and a run in five innings.

McDonald received a no-decision, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out four.

Bullpen report
It didn?t go well for the Phils? relievers. Phillippe Aumont started the eighth inning and retired just one hitter. The big right-hander allowed three runs on three hits before turning it over to veteran Chad Durbin.

Durbin got the last two outs of the inning, but not before he walked a pair and gave up a sacrifice fly.

The Pirates got a pair of relief innings from Justin Wilson and Tony Watson. The lefty Watson picked up his first career save.

At the plate
Ryan Howard had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in two of the Phillies? runs. Dom Brown also had a pair of doubles and RBIs.

Otherwise, the Phillies failed to cash in on plenty of chances, going 2 for 15 with runners in scoring position.

For the Pirates, Gaby Sanchez in the sixth hit his second homer of the series. He also singled in a pair of runs. Meanwhile, pinch-hitter Garrett Jones hit a bases-loaded double in the eighth to put the Pirates ahead for good. Pitcher James McDonald added a pair of singles.

Outta here
Manager Charlie Manuel was ejected from the game by third-base ump Dan Iassogna in the ninth inning.? It was Manuel?s first ejection of the season.

Up next
The Phillies head to New York for a three-game series against the Mets on Friday night. Kyle Kendrick (1-1, 3.28) is slated to take on righty Dillon Gee (1-3, 5.95) in the opener.

In Saturday?s matinee, Jonathan Pettibone (0-0, 3.38) will make his second big-league start against Shawn Marcum (season debut). The series concludes on Sunday afternoon when Cole Hamels (0-3, 5.40) faces lefty Jonathan Niese (2-1, 3.81).
