International Man Of Mitt-stery

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ), CHRIS GOOD ( @c_good ) and ELIZABETH HARTFIELD ( @LizHartfield )

NOTABLES:

MITT ROMNEY'S EURO-TRIP CONTINUES. Mitt Romney has landed in Gdansk, Poland - the third and final county on his week-long overseas trip. While there he plans to meet with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, former President Lech Walesa, visit the World War II Westerplatte Memorial and visit the Solidarity Monument Site before heading to Warsaw. But his fly-around to Great Britain, Israel and Poland has not been without turbulence. Romney addressed his views on a potential Israeli military strike against Iran in an interview with ABC's DAVID MUIR yesterday. WATCH: http://abcn.ws/Qqr9dB

OBAMA ADVISER: ROMNEY EMBARRASSED U.S. Senior Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs, on Romney's Olympics comments before traveling to London: "Mitt Romney wondered aloud whether London was ready for the Olympics, and I think it's clear that voters in this country wonder aloud whether Mitt Romney is ready for the world ? I'm happy David Cameron had the last word, because I thought it was embarrassing for our country." http://abcn.ws/MVvulx

VEEPSTAKES: MARCO RUBIO DRAWS BIG CROWDS : Rubio held his first solo events on behalf of Romney this weekend and drew hundreds. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, a crowd of 800 attended Rubio's rally at his old elementary school in Las Vegas Saturday http://bit.ly/Odx0Nu, and a crowd of 200 gathered to meet Rubio outside the Iowa state capitol in Des Moines through Rubio's appearance was ultimately canceled due to flight problems, the Des Moines Register reported. http://dmreg.co/QGV2Rn

ROMNEY CAMPAIGN'S BUSY MONDAY: Today the Romney campaign has organized 18 "We Did Build This" events in 12 states. According to a campaign official: "There will be events in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Nevada, Missouri, and New Mexico to allow small business owners the chance to respond to President Obama's claim that 'if you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen.'" Also the campaign is striking the same theme with a new web video titled, "These Hands: Ohio." WATCH: http://mi.tt/OpQaDy

THE NOTE:

Mitt Romney got many of the headlines he wanted out of his trip to Israel this weekend:

"Romney Backs Israeli Stance on Threat of Nuclear Iran," wrote The New York Times; Politico weighed in: "Mitt Romney: No more 'diplomatic distance' from Israel"; and the Wall Street Journal noted, "Romney Talks Tough."

But the Republican presidential candidate also got some he didn't:

"Romney Campaign Muddles Iran Stand," according to BuzzFeed; National Public Radio put it this way: "Romney Camp Comments On Israeli Action In Iran, Then Clarifies"; and from Bloomberg News: "Romney Opens Fundraiser in Israel to Media After Outcry."

From his apparent insult of London Olympics organizers to his clarification of an adviser's comment on the fraught issue of a military strike against Iran, Romney's been learning a lesson about the perils of international communication.

After Romney foreign policy aide Dan Senor noted that "if Israel has to take action on its own, in order to stop Iran from developing [nuclear] capability the governor would respect that decision," ABC's David Muir sought, in a one-on-one interview with Romney, to decipher exactly where Romney stands on the question. http://abcn.ws/Q46b16

"I recognize the right of Israel to defend itself," Romney told Muir yesterday in Jerusalem. "At the same time we are two nations, both committed to employing every means we have to keep Iran from pursuing their nuclear folly and that means every diplomatic course, economic forces as well, sanctions are beginning to have a greater impact on Iran we want to execute all of these elements of soft power if you will but of course we maintain all options. If all of our political and economic options fail we of course retain military options as well."

And, in an interview with CBS News, Romney added: "Because I'm on foreign soil, I don't want to be creating new foreign policy for my country or in any way to distance myself from the foreign policy of our nation."

When it came to one of the issues that had been dominating the election-year debate before he left for his trip abroad - whether he would release additional years of tax returns - Romney was also keeping his cards close to the vest.

As ABC's Emily Friedman notes, Romney could not say today whether he had ever paid a tax rate lower than 13.9 percent, saying he would have to "go back and check."

"I haven't calculated that," Romney told Muir. "I'm happy to go back and look, but my view is I've paid all the taxes required by law."

"From time to time I've been audited as it happens, I think, to other citizens as well, and the accounting firm which prepares my taxes has done a very thorough and complete job pay taxes as legally due," Romney added. "I don't pay more than are legally due."

More tax questions likely await the GOP candidate when he returns stateside, but with Romney on the final leg of his trip, Democrats are reveling in Romney's missteps while overseas.

One top Democratic official told The Note: "We're going to start the week by tying a bow on Romney's foreign trip where he proved to be an embarrassment and not at all prepared to be commander-in-chief." MITT AND MUIR: WATCH ABC's David Muir interview Mitt Romney yesterday in Jerusalem: http://abcn.ws/Qqr9dB

TRANSCRIPT of the interview: http://abcn.ws/Qqr9dB

ROMNEY ON LONDON: I TELL PEOPLE WHAT I BELIEVE. In ABC's wide-ranging, exclusive interview with Mitt Romney in Jerusalem, David Muir asked Romney about the Olympics comments that roiled the British press. Romney responded: "I tend to tell people what I actually believe and referring to the comments that were made in the media was something which I felt was an honest reflection of what was being concerned what was concerning folks and having had the experience I'm absolutely convinced the organizing committee did what people hoped which is overcome the challenges and produced a brilliant product." http://abcn.ws/LXy3UK

ROMNEY VS. OBAMA ON AFGHANISTAN: WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? More from David Muir's interview: On Afghanistan, Romney told Muir, "It's the same time frame the president is speaking of with regards to the transition of the afghan forces, I also indicated that I want to make sure that we have had consultation with the commanders on the ground. The place where the president and I have had a difference with regards to time table is with withdrawal of our surge troops. Commanders were looking at December 2012 withdrawal point the president moves that up to September 2012 which is still during fighting season I sided with the commanders and felt the 2012 decision, the September 2012 decision was premature." http://abcn.ws/P8BFzf

GOD AND MITT AT THE KING DAVID: Romney spoke Monday morning at a fundraiser at Jerusalem's King David Hotel where wealth donors in attendance included billionaire Sheldon Adelson: Romney weighed in on his impressions of Israel: "I am overwhelmingly impressed with the hand of providence, whenever it chooses to apply itself, and also the greatness of the human spirit, and how individuals who reach for greatness and have purpose above themselves are able to build and accomplish things that could only be done by a species created in the image of God. I come to this place, therefore, with a sense of profound humility, as I look around here at great people who've accomplished a great thing, and also a sense of spiritual connection, acknowledging the hand of providence in establishing this place and making it a holy city."

NOTE IT!

ABC's RICK KLEIN: Is it over yet? The no-downside Romney foreign trip left its potential on the other side of the water's edge. Not that the soil back home is that much more friendly (thanks, Newsweek), but the shadow of London followed Romney to Jerusalem and now Poland. In Israel, Romney sough to chart a distinct foreign policy without defining it as such, even as he tempers down what his campaign aides have been saying about a possible Israeli strike on Iran. The trip is hard to second-guess - candidates go abroad these days, and London for the Olympics plus a visit with an old friend named Bibi made too much sense to pass up. Yesterday's pictures, of the Romneys at the Western Wall, and next to a chummy Israeli prime minister, may have been worth the airfare alone. But Friday and its latest jobs report can't come fast enough now for Boston.

"THIS WEEK" REWIND: MESSAGE TEST: GIBBS VS. MADDEN ON THE ECONOMY. Obama adviser Robert Gibbs and senior Romney adviser Kevin Madden sparred on the election's biggest issue:

MADDEN: "[T]his is a president who sort of abandoned, really, any idea of offering the public any new ideas about getting out of the current economic stagnation. ? We have had unemployment over 8 percent for 41 months now. And this is a president who continues to call for new taxes. This is a president that continues to call for new regulations on small businesses, the entrepreneurs and the Americans that are trying to help grow and expand the economy."

GIBBS: "[T]he president is the president of the United States. He understand where the buck stops. We also understand what we inherited and what we can't go back to, which are the tried-and-tested ideas of four years ago which got us into this mess. ? This week, the Senate rightly voted to ensure that when - at the end of the year, we extend tax cuts for middle-class families. But their economic theory is we get this economy going by giving millionaires and billionaires more and more tax cuts. That's not what's going to get this economy moving."

WHAT ISRAEL THINKS OF ROMNEY. Ruth Marcus, who recently traveled to Israel, discussed Mitt Romney's trip there on ABC's "This Week" round table: "One thing that I took away understanding about Israel is that it has a little bit of a Sally Field relationship with this president, which is, 'Does he like us? Does he really like us?' And they're nervous about that. And that actually cuts both ways for Mitt Romney. They are interested in him, they are looking forward to hearing from him all the words of support, but they are nervous about the relationship already with the president who they think might have them to kick around for the next four years, and they don't want to make that relationship worse."

DOMESTIC POLITICS: ISRAEL AND EVANGELICALS. George Will, during the roundtabe: "The vast majority of American Jews are going to vote Democratic. Always have, far as I can tell, always will. The great support Israel right now, the energy is in the Evangelical community, which is part of the Republican base. So the trip to Israel is a way of firing up this enormously important, somewhat skeptical of Mitt Romney, Republican base."

THE BUZZ:

with Chris Good ( @c_good)

CHENEY IS BACK AND TALKING TO ABC'S JON KARL: ABC's Eric Noe writes: With a new heart, Dick Cheney is back. In an exclusive interview with ABC News' Jonathan Karl, Cheney reflects on the "miracle" that a heart transplant promises to give him years of added life. And Cheney shows he is as confrontational as ever, taking on President Obama - and even Sarah Palin. Cheney, 71, details how far back he has come. He remembers waking from weeks of heavy sedation after having a pump installed in his heart in 2010, a grueling operation that left him seeing his own mortality in the mirror.

CHENEY: PICKING PALIN WAS A 'MISTAKE.' Cheney tells Jonathan Karl: "[T]he test to get on that small list has to be: is this person capable of being president of the United States? And that's usually a very, very short list ? I think that that was one of the problems McCain had. I like Gov Palin. I've met her, I know her. She was an attractive candidate, but based on her background-she'd only been a governor for two years-I don't think she passed that test ? of being ready to take over. And I think that was a mistake." http://abcn.ws/MV7nUf

RECALLS KNOWING HIS HEART WAS 'AT AN END.' Cheney tells Jonathan Karl: "Two years ago this time I was on a respirator, heavily sedated. Just had a pump? installed on my heart because my heart had gotten so weak after six heart attacks and 30-some years of heart disease that it was, you know, it was at the end. ? I lost 40 pounds. I was heavily sedated in the intensive care unit for weeks afterwards. I had pneumonia while I was in recovering from the surgery. And by the time I came out from under I looked in a mirror and what I saw was my dad shortly before he died. He was in his 80s." http://abcn.ws/PbsDkN

OBAMA WORSE THAN JIMMY CARTER. Asked for his general assessment of President Obama, here's what Dick Cheney had to say: "I think he's been one of our weakest presidents. I just fundamentally disagree with him philosophically. I'd be hard put to find any Democratic president that I've disagreed with more." Karl: "Worse than Jimmy Carter, from your perspective?" Cheney: "Yes."

BILL CLINTON WILL HAVE KEY ROLE AT CONVENTION. Former President Bill Clinton will play a central role at the Democratic National Convention this year, assuming the stage for a prime-time address in a slot normally reserved for an incumbent VP. Clinton will speak Wednesday night in Charlotte, the evening before President Obama will formally accept the nomination in Bank of America Stadium, campaign and DNCC officials tell ABC News's Devin Dwyer. Biden will share the stage with Obama on Thursday, delivering his own solo address before the president speaks, the officials said. News of the speaker line-up was first reported by the New York Times. Clinton's role at the Convention comes as Obama increasingly invokes his popular Democratic predecessor on the campaign trail in part as a defense of his economic plan. The two have also conducted joint fundraisers in the past few months to help rouse the Democratic base.

NEW ABC/YAHOO! VIDEO: OLYMPIC POLITICS. The Olympics are supposed to be a time when the entire world puts aside politics and comes together for athletic competition, but it doesn't always work out that way. In the latest installment of "Political Punch," ABC's Jake Tapper recaps the controversy surrounding Mitt Romney's trip to London, the Olympic Committee's request that footage not be used in political ads, and a history of Olympic politics. http://yhoo.it/Ox3T8d

ROMNEY BRINGS IN $1 MILLION AT ISRAEL FUNDRAISER. Yahoo! News' Holly Bailey reports: "Mitt Romney raised more than $1 million at a campaign fundraiser here on his way out of Israel. At least 40 donors paid between $25,000 and $50,000 apiece to attend a breakfast with Romney at a hotel - including Las Vegas casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, who has contributed more than $20 million to Republicans and conservative super PACS so far this election cycle. Of that total, $10 million went to Restore Our Future, a political committee backing Romney's bid for president." http://abcn.ws/MOdPho

HOW WILL RUSSIA COMMENTS PLAY IN POLAND? Businessweek's Nicole Gaouette writes: "While Polish relations with Obama have been bumpy, Romney's attempts to play off Cold War fears in a former Soviet satellite and to connect with Americans of eastern European descent may not resonate in today's Poland, analysts and scholars said. Romney has called Russia, Poland's historic foe, America's 'No. 1 geopolitical foe' and accused Obama of the 'sudden abandonment' of Poles because the president delayed - and then revived - plans for a missile defense system in eastern Europe." http://buswk.co/Q4x4T9

ROMNEY FUNNELS MONEY TO STATE PARTIES. Roll Call's David Drucker reports: "Individuals are limited to contributions of $2,500 to Romney for President and $30,800 to the Republican National Committee. But through the Romney Victory Inc. joint fundraising committee, which raised $140 million in the second quarter, maxed-out Romney and RNC donors can contribute to the Republican parties of Idaho, Massachusetts, Oklahoma and Vermont. There, the money will await redistribution to state parties in presidential battlegrounds as determined by team Romney and the RNC." http://bit.ly/PbkDQQ

A TEXAS TEA PARTY: GOP SENATE PRIMARY SET FOR TUESDAY. USA Today's Susan Davis reports: "One of the biggest tests of strength for the movement's ability to upend the GOP establishment in 2012 is Tuesday, when formerly long-shot candidate attorney Ted Cruz is favored by election analysts to upset Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the Senate Republican primary runoff in a race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. Cruz started the race underfunded, lesser-known and without the support of the Texas Republican Party establishment, including Gov. Rick Perry. Endorsements from GOP activists, such as former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Sens. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky, brought in national attention and money." http://usat.ly/Oceesx

BIDEN TO AFT: ROMNEY DOESN'T VALUE EDUCATION. The Associated Press reports on Vice President Joe Biden's adderss to the American Federation of Teachers national convention: "Vice President Joe Biden, in a speech Sunday to the nation's second largest teachers unions, said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney doesn't treat public education as a priority and distrusts the hardworking teachers who struggle to create opportunity for the nation's young people. ? From what Romney and his GOP rivals said during the primary debates, 'it looks like they don't think public education is worth the investment,' Biden said."

NEW SENATE AD: WISCONSIN ENGINES. Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin, who is running for Senate in Wisconsin, released a new TV ad, highlighting local manufacturing: "Coast guard cutters: built in America, but powered by engines manufactured overseas, even though you can't buy a better engine than the ones made right here in Wisconsin. That's why I led the fight to require the Coast Guard to buy their engines from us, not foreign companies. I'm Tammy Baldwin. While the Coast Guard protects our shores, we can also protect our jobs. That's why I approve this message." http://bit.ly/MWnXBf

-PORTMAN 'FEELS THE PRESSURE' TO DELIVER OHIO: Campaigning in Ohio on Saturday, Portman said he sees an added pressure in bringing Romney a win in his home state of Ohio, NBC News' Andrew Rafferty reported. "Even though he is not yet on the Republican presidential ticket, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman already feels the burden of delivering his home state for presumptive nominee Mitt Romney," Rafferty wrote. "'I already feel the pressure,'Portman said when asked whether he felt he would be responsible for ensuring the Buckeye State is red this November if chosen as Romney's running mate. 'I'm chairing the effort here in Ohio and again I'm feeling good about things because there is a just a lot of volunteers who are stepping forward. I haven't seen energy like this in past elections, presidential or otherwise? My focus is going to be Ohio. And I do believe that this year, Ohio could make the difference again.'" http://nbcnews.to/Qr82Qp

-RYAN SEES WISCONSIN WIN: Rep. Paul Ryan said he believes Romney can pull off a victory in Wisconsin this fall, NBC News' Alex Moe reported. "Campaigning for the GOP nominee in his home state with just 100 days before the presidential election, Congressman Paul Ryan said he is confident Mitt Romney can win here in the Badger State this November," Moe wrote. "'We haven't gone Republican on top of the ticket since 1984 but we think this time is different. We think it's different because people in Wisconsin are tired of the direction Washington is going. They don't the president's policies have worked,' Ryan told NBC News in an interview Sunday evening. They think, 'this is not the uniter. This is not the hope and change. This is a man who is dividing us, who is giving us terrible economic policies, who is growing government, who is growing the debt, and that just doesn't rub right with Wisconsinites.'" http://nbcnews.to/MOfymY

Apple to Hold September 12 Event to Launch 'iPhone 5' and 'iPad Mini'?

This entry needs translation. To help us and submit a translation please click here

Apple will reportedly hold an event on Wednesday, September 12th to unveil the 'iPhone 5' and 'iPad mini', according to iMore.

The new iPhone is said to launch just nine days later on Friday, September 21st but the site hasn't heard any details on when the iPad mini might launch.

As for hardware, we're still hearing the iPad mini will be exactly like the 9.7-inch iPad, only scaled down to 7.x-inches. We originally heard Apple had a few iPhone 5 prototypes, including 3.5-inch and 4-inch versions, but recent reports and parts leaks make it look like the 4-inch, 16:9 screen version is what Apple's going with. We've also consistently heard all new iOS devices will have the new, smaller Dock connector going forward, which along with the nano-SIM and rumored in-cell display should leave lots of room for the LTE radio we heard about earlier in the year, and the bigger battery to go along with it.

Yesterday, photos and video of a fully assembled 'iPhone 5' housing leaked online has expectation builds towards Apple's big reveal.

Moroccan universities impose compulsory ... - Morocco World News

By Larbi Arbaoui

Morocco World News

Tinejdad, July 28, 2012

Moroccan universities proceed in putting into force the ministry circular imposing fees of compulsory insurance on students during the next school year 2012 ? 2013.

The school of Science at the University of Mohammed I in Oujda, published a note including insurance certificate from the bank, precisely Banque Populaire, as a registration requirement for the new students to enroll in the university.

The insurance certificate which is a new registration requirement to the Moroccan universities is imposed by the ministry circular addressed to the Moroccan universities by Lahcen Daoudi, the Minister of Higher Education.

College students who are about to register for the coming school year expressed their dissatisfaction with the unprecedented requirement for registration by the university, regarding this attempt as a step to impose more registration fees on students and to put an end to free education as is stipulated in the plans of the Ministry of Education.

The recent statements issued by Lahcen Daoudi in respect to the cancellation of free education have created quite stir on the parts of students and university teachers who considered the decision an attack targeting poor social classes.

The Minister has already stepped back last week from his announcements that higher education will no longer be free.

EYES ON LONDON: British anti-climax, hidden flame

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

IT WASN'T TO BE

The excitement near the road course finish line outside the palace fell flat as Great Britain and favorite Mark Cavendish failed to win a medal.

"I was there when he didn't win it!" shouted Richard Jones of London.

He'd been watching the race on television with his wife and another couple when they decided with an hour to go to hustle over to Buckingham Palace for the finish.

"We practically did a triathlon to get here," said Jane Carson of Chester. "And we didn't even get very close ? but neither did Cav."

STAG DO

A rowing regatta isn't the usual place to start a bachelor party.

It worked out just fine for husband-to-be Martin Stanning, though, as he watched sister Heather romp to victory in the women's pair with partner Helen Glover at Dorney Lake? setting a Olympic best time in the process.

Martin was under orders in the "stag do" ? as it's called in Britain ? from his older brother Alistair, who was organizer-in-chief. His parents were there, too.

Glover and Stanning are big favorites to win the final of the women's pair on Wednesday after going through this season unbeaten. If they win gold, they'll become the first British women to do so.

HOT VENUE

Although the ExCel venue is well south of the Olympic Park, the venue is shaping up as a surprisingly good place to catch the Olympic spirit.

ExCel is hosting boxing, weightlifting, judo, fencing and table tennis in separate spaces, but the sprawling complex is connected by a central hall that has turned into a pedestrian mall where the combined crowd can mingle amid a large array of dining options.

With thousands of fans pouring off trains Saturday, ExCel had a remarkable vibe as each of its sports except wrestling got underway. The venue's only obvious flaw is a lack of seating in that central hall, where hundreds of people are just sitting on the ground to eat their baked potatoes and curries.

HERE COMES THE SUN

Another day in often-soggy London, another healthy dose of blue skies and bright sunshine. With a cool breeze blowing gently, it's hard to imagine a better start to these games from a weather perspective.

How did we get so lucky? Maybe Sir Paul asked John and George to put in a good word for a little help from above.

GYM INTRIGUE

There's intrigue at the men's gymnastics.

China, which hasn't lost a major competition since the 2004 Olympics, is already second after a dismal performance this morning.

The U.S. has got through its worst event ? pommel horse ? in decent shape while Japan, runner-up to China at both the Beijing Olympics and the last two world championships, had to count a fall on high bar, one of its better events.

OLYMPIC SPIRIT

Putting aside their rivalry here, football players from Brazil, Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand are sharing the same hotel in Manchester and are getting along just fine.

The Brazilian federation has posted photos of the teams playing table tennis together and says players from the four teams have been mingling in activities throughout the hotel. The teams are playing in Group C of the men's Olympic tournament.

SECOND BEST

Greg Munford, 31, applied for "loads" of tickets but didn't get a single one. "I was gutted," he says.

So he came from his home in the English city of Bath to London's Hyde Park, where thousands of people are sprawled on wood chips (the grass fell victim to a concert series and wet weather) watching five big screens showing everything from handball to cycling.

"If I can't get to the venues this is the second-best place to be," says Munford. "I'm soaking up the spirit." He admits he didn't understand much of the dressage on the screen, but offered: "It all looks very elegant!"

There's chaos outside Buckingham Palace where the men's road course race will zoom by at the finish.

Thousands are surging toward the barricades, as security is imploring people to back up into Green Park or move further down the course.

Nobody wants to move, though, as everyone is eager to see Great Britain possibly win its first medal.

HIDDEN FLAME

It's a shame you can't see the Olympic flame. That was the reaction from visitors to London's Olympic Park and across Twitter on Saturday, as the intricate cauldron and its copper petals remained out of sight in the middle of the stadium.

All recent Olympics have featured a flaming cauldron, visible across the Olympic precinct.

But in London, only spectators lucky enough to have a ticket for events inside the main stadium will actually see it. Other park visitors will only be able to see an image beamed onto big screens.

At a news conference Saturday, cauldron creator Thomas Heatherwick defended the decision, saying organizers had tried to resist the temptation of creating a cauldron that was bigger, fatter or higher than at previous games.

"There was the complete precedent of the 1948 (London) Games of the cauldron set within the stadium... to one side with the spectators and with the technology we now have that didn't exist in 1948 it can be shared with everyone in the Park with screens," Heatherwick said.

The cauldron design was backed by the UK prime minister, but some members of the International Olympic Committee are said to be privately critical of the concept.

HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Seems even the queen can't resist the opportunity to act with Daniel Craig.

The British monarch didn't need much persuading to take part in the brief flick that electrified the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, says Jackie Brock-Doyle, the spokeswoman for the organizing committee.

"She liked the whole concept Danny brought together," she says ? presumably right down to the detail of having the queen's corgis, Monty, Holly and Willow, similarly take starring roles.

The matter was presented to her majesty by organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe last year.

CLOSE SHAVE

British gymnast Louis Smith knows a thing or two about making a statement. The eccentric 23-year-old ? the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist on pommel horse ? is known as much for his well-coiffed hair and elaborate tattoos as his elegant routines.

A couple of days before the biggest ? and perhaps final ? meet of his life, Smith slipped out of the Olympic village to his home in Peterborough to visit his barber.

"I could have used one in the village, but I didn't want to tell him he was doing it wrong," Smith said.

He returned with a distinctive do, with shaved sides and a meticulously groomed flowing flattop.

Smith says the "hip" cut is designed to grab the kind of attention he thinks the sport needs.

AN AMAECHI MOMENT

Strolling through security to enter Olympic Park, former British basketball star John Amaechi says he has been quite pleased with how his home country has opened these games.

The center paired with gymnast Nadia Comaneci to take the torch to the roof of the North Greenwich Arena earlier this month and is eager to see how Britain opens against powerful Russia in its men's basketball opener on Sunday.

"It's been wonderful so far, but the real work hasn't even started," Amaechi says. "That will tell the tale."

I SEE BY YOUR OUTFIT ...

Dressed head to toe in the British flag ? or, rather, AS the British flag ? Mick Burn wanted to find a spot along the road course to cheer cyclist Mark Cavendish.

But his outfit was so extreme, the man from Watford in Hertfortshire couldn't make it more than a few feet (meters) at a time without being stopped by fans wanting to pose for a picture with him.

"I've been mobbed all day," he says. And he's delighted by that fact.

It took him almost two years and 200 pounds (more than $300) to assemble the outfit, which consisted of everything from "posh golf pants," a waistcoat, his watch, eyeglasses and even his underwear. The toughest item was the sport coat, which cost him 50 pounds (about $75) on eBay.

Burn had thought his niece, rower Lucinda Gooderham, would be competing in these games. She didn't qualify, but he vowed to keep fine-tuning the outfit for Rio.

Digital Photography Tutorial ? How To Become A Wedding ...

? Simple Ways On How To Get Great Looking Photos???

Weddings are great photo opportunities. It?s a day that everyone wants to remember and happy couples often need a reliable, professional service to capture their wedding perfectly for them to remember for the rest of their lives. Investing in relationships with wedding planners is a great way to gain access to this profitable business. The wedding planner will refer you to couples who will be more likely to hire you based on the wedding planner?s advice.

Successful wedding planners only work with proven professional photographers with experience as a wedding planner?s reputation is extremely important. They will never recommend an unknown service to their clients. So your first job is to get known. You will have to create an impressive portfolio and a few testimonials from satisfied customers.

If you can, contact the bride and offer your services. Send a promotional package by mail or try reaching her by telephone. Also, offer to take photographs at the bride?s home prior to the wedding. You can get lovely candid shots of attendants helping the bride with her veil, flower girls primping in front of the mirror, etc. This is not a service that a studio photographer offers. Be sure to incorporate this as one of your unique selling points.

You can contact the bride by phone or mail. Offering to take pictures of the preparation for the wedding is a good way to make an impression as most studio photographers do not offer this service. Sending the bride free promotional material is another way to get business.

Offer to photograph events related to the wedding for example bridal showers, the rehearsal dinner or the gift opening. Another way to generate business is to contact people involved in weddings such as florists and bakeries, and inquire about leaving brochures or negotiating a referral fee.

A wedding photographer should always be looking for ways to offer more value to his or her customers. One neat idea is to find a scrap artist and form a business relationship so that you can offer clients a wedding scrapbook for their memories. This can leave a great impression. One last thing- make the bride happy, and your job will be much easier.

Report: Apple considered investing in Twitter | Current Editorials

A Wall Street Journal story published last night has revealed that Apple considered investing in Twitter sometime last year. According to ?people familiar with the matter,? the talks never amounted to anything, and there are ?no current formal investment or acquisition discussions between the companies.? Though an investment is currently off the table,?Apple is said to have met with a number of social media start-ups recently to ?discuss product ideas?, according to WSJ.

The Wall Street Journal story debunked an earlier report published by The New York Times. Sources told The Times that talks were currently taking place between Apple and Twitter concerning a possible investment in the hundred million dollar range. Such an investment would have valued Twitter at $10 billion, up from their previous $8.4 billion valuation quoted last year. Since the Times story was published, numerous other sites have corroborated the Wall Street Journal report, confirming that Apple is not currently planning to invest in Twitter.

Apple has struggled to grab a foothold in the lucrative social networking space (remember Ping?). Though no investment was ever made, Apple has still managed to form a strong partnership with Twitter over the last few years. Twitter integration was built-in to last year?s iOS 5 release, and recently spread to the Mac with the launch of OS X Mountain Lion. In fact, the relationship between the two companies is so good that Twitter has assigned a VP to work full-time with Apple.

Apple and Twitter have not commented on the rumours.

Trustees: Sanctions better than football ban

Penn State's trustees may not like the NCAA's unprecedented sanctions against the university's football program, but they say the alternative ? the so-called "death penalty" ? would have been worse.

In their first joint statement since Penn State was hit with a $60 million fine, a four-year bowl game ban, reduced football scholarships and the forfeiture of 112 wins, trustees said Wednesday the NCAA punishment was "unfortunate" and "difficult."

University spokesman David La Torre said the potential for a four-year ban on playing football was floated during discussions between Penn State President Rodney Erickson and NCAA officials.

The trustees met with Erickson on the subject at a State College hotel Wednesday and afterward issued their statement.

The penalty hasn't been used since the NCAA suspended Southern Methodist University for the 1987 season. SMU then sat out the '88 season on its own and has never fully recovered its status in college football.

Reporters were barred from the conference room where the Penn State trustees met, and trustees avoided them after the meeting broke up.

The potential for a four-year ban, first reported by ESPN, showed how high the stakes were as college sports' governing body considered how to respond to an internal school investigation by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found former coach Joe Paterno and three other top college officials helped conceal reports that Jerry Sandusky, a former assistant coach, was abusing children.

NCAA president Mark Emmert said this week that if a total football ban had been imposed, other penalties would have accompanied it.

"If the death penalty were to be imposed, I'm quite sure that the executive committee and I ... would not have agreed to just the death penalty. It would have included other penalties as well," Emmert said as the sanctions were unveiled.

An NCAA spokeswoman declined further comment Wednesday on negotiations with Penn State.

Many alumni and some trustees were incensed over the unprecedented NCAA penalty ? which likely will cripple Penn State's football team for years to come ? and Penn State's quick acceptance of it.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday that Gov. Tom Corbett said the penalties imposed on Penn State "go well beyond" those with responsibility for the handling of the sex abuse allegations against Sandusky.

"What's important to note is the kids that are up there right now, whether they are students or the student-athletes, the members of that team or the members of any other team, had nothing to do with this. Nothing," Corbett said. "And they are the ones that, unfortunately, are bearing the brunt of this. And that's what I find difficult."

A person with knowledge of the trustees' meeting said earlier Wednesday that trustees were to discuss whether Erickson had the authority to agree to the sanctions without first getting the board's approval. The person was not authorized to discuss the meeting and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Some trustees had expressed concern that Erickson may have violated a board rule that says the board must authorize the signing of "contracts, legal documents, and other obligations."

The board statement made no reference to the propriety of what Erickson had done, saying trustees held a discussion but did not take any votes.

"The board finds the punitive sanctions difficult and the process with the NCAA unfortunate," the statement said. "But as we understand it, the alternatives were worse as confirmed by NCAA President Mark Emmert's recent statement that Penn State was likely facing a multi-year death sentence."

La Torre said Wednesday that Erickson had authority to act without the approval of the full board.

Elephants' move has to wait for cooler weather

SAN ANDREAS, Calif. (AP) ? A trip to move three elephants from the Toronto Zoo to a Performing Animal Welfare Society sanctuary in Northern California has been delayed because of extreme heat expected in Canada in early August.

PAWS co-founder Pat Derby says moving elephants is risky enough without adding unpredictable obstacles.

To protect the elephants, Derby says the society and the city of Toronto decided to postpone the trip.

When it occurs, the trip will start with a one-hour truck ride from the zoo to the airport, where the elephants will be put on a Russian cargo jet and flown to San Francisco. Trucks will then take the elephants to their retirement home in San Andreas.

Derby says they hope to make the move by the end of September.

Chick-fil-A Doesn't Belong In Politics ? CBS Pittsburgh

The Right Politics

Politics is becoming a part of everyday life in the United States, even for those people who claim they don?t like politics or won?t allow politics to be discussed at their dinner table. Unfortunately for those persons, politics are infiltrating most every part of America?s fabric ? most recently the huge portion of the fabric that includes American businesses.

Most recently, a business that has entrenched itself in politics is the Chick-fil-A restaurant chain due to the personal opinion given by its president, Dan Cathy. Since last week when Cathy said he supports traditional marriage and no other form of marriage, the loud protests and soft acceptances of his comments have gone viral ? and more. After Twitter, Facebook, and other forms of social media had their initial say, the politicizing of the poultry restaurant business began ? literally.

After Cathy was trounced for giving his opinion on the controversial subject, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee was quick to add his approval of the fast food chain?s assertion that the Biblical form of marriage was just. Huckabee has even called upon supporters of what Cathy opined to participate in an ?Appreciation Day? on August 1st. How well that call for patronizing Chick-fil-A goes is yet to be seen.

On the other end of the political spectrum, there are politicians like Chicago Alderman Joe Moreno who are extremely opposed to the message delivered via Cathy?s outspokenness. The Chicago politician is now blocking the opening of a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his Northwest Side community. In Chicago, aldermen have what is referred to as ?alderman?s privilege? which gives Moreno the power to block the business from proceeding.

The area of Chicago of which Moreno is alderman ? the 1st Ward which includes the Logan Square neighborhood ? is becoming more and more contemporary with its recent developments and would have welcomed a Chick-fil-A with open arms and pocketbooks before now. At this point, however, Cathy and his Chick-fil-A can forget it.

While some have asked Alderman Moreno about freedom of speech, the alderman simply responds that zoning is not a right ? and that is where Moreno?s ?alderman?s privilege? and authority have come into play.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has appropriately joined Moreno?s move to block the restaurant in Chicago by saying that having that restaurant ? particularly in Moreno?s ward where many gays, lesbians, and trans-genders are in residence ? wouldn?t be a successful business for the city because people simply aren?t going to go there now. Emanuel added that he wouldn?t want the business in Chicago because Chicago is open to all its neighbors ? and such prejudice against some of the city?s citizens is not wanted in Chicago.

Though I rarely agree with Emanuel, I must admit that this time he is right on the mark.

Surprisingly, Chick-fil-A was founded in another populous American city, Atlanta. Where does an otherwise successful business person from a big American city get the idea that he can blast the GLAAD community ? or any segment of society ? and still have a profitable business at the end of the day?

Chick-fil-A now claims via Facebook that the restaurant treats every patron with ?honor, dignity and respect ? regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender?. This contradictory statement from the restaurant chain is obviously not going to carry much weight with those it has offended and those who totally disapprove of a business giving their opinion on same-sex marriage at all.

First of all, what was Dan Cathy thinking when he thought that anyone gives a damn about what he thinks about same-sex marriage? Second of all, did he forget he heads a company that could lose many customers ? possibly his entire business ? when he made his ?blurt-ation?? Did he actually believe that spewing his controversial belief on an otherwise social, political, and religious issue wasn?t going to have a negative effect on his business? Did he feel he had some moral or religious need to give his opinion?

Whatever Cathy?s reasoning, he has a lot to learn about the separation of his business and the unnecessary preaching of his morality. Unfortunately for his business and the many people who depend on him for a financial livelihood, he is most likely learning his lesson too late.

Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? Dog Training In Brisbane ...

For people who love dogs, the concept of having a new pet inside the home is unquestionably a very exciting event. But if you consider yourself to be a true pet owner, you need to know that there is more to pet ownership than only feeding, grooming, and playing with your canine friend. One facet of dog ownership that?s usually overlooked by a lot of folks is the case of training their family dog. This is mainly due to the reason that folks generally think that training is only applicable if you wish to teach your pet many different neat tricks that is aimed to entertain. That is simply far from the truth because there is more to canine training than teaching your dog the occasional sit, play dead, and fetch tricks. Dog training is something that you must perform if you consider yourself to be a sensible dog owner. Keep on reading so you will understand the importance of dog training in Brisbane.

One of the primary explanations why dog training in Brisbane is essential is that it is a key component in establishing and boosting the connection between your animal and you. You don???t wish to have a dog which is free-willed and dominant that it doesn?t have qualms when it comes to disobeying the owners. Such qualities will surely turn out to be a dilemma afterwards not only for the owners but for the dog itself.
